What is a DTM?

Like a printer in the office world, a field instrument in the FDT world brings along its own driver, including user interface. This driver is called Device Type Manager, in short, DTM. All data and functions of the instrument are included in it. Each DTM has its own adjustment interface, one best-suited to the instrument. The DTMs can be integrated in all FDT-based frame applications, such as e.g. PACTware.

A DTM has almost no limitations with regard to presentation and user guidance. Adjustment of all available instrument functions, perfectly adapted to the user's requirements, is thus possible. The adjustment is also supported graphically. DTM technology allows the same instrument adjustment procedures to be used in any FDT environment.

DTMs are available from the respective instrument manufacturers. Many manufacturers offer free-of-charge versions with slightly limited functions as downloads.

Characteristics of a DTM

  • Software for instrument adjustment in FDT frame programs such as e.g. PACTware
  • Contains the complete logic of an instrument
  • Is adapted perfectly to the instrument
  • Provides graphical support for operation
  • Offline and online parameter adjustment possible
  • Checking of the signal flow by means of simulation
  • Diagnostics options
  • Documentation of the instrument settings
  • Online help

What types of DTM exist?

Generally there are two DTM types, the so-called device DTMs and the communication DTMs.

Device DTM

Device DTMs are DTMs for parameter adjustment of field devices such as e.g. valves, positioners, transmitters, intelligent field connection boxes, motors, etc.

Device DTMs are available from the respective instrument manufacturers. Many manufacturers offer free-of-charge versions with slightly limited functions as a download.

Communication DTM

Communication DTMs are required for communication with a field device via a point-to-point connection or also via any network structure. They are available for different bus systems and communication components such as e.g. PC communication cards, gateways, interface components, remote I/Os, couplers, multiplexers, etc.

Communication DTMs are available from the respective manufacturer of the communication components.
PACTware already includes a communication DTM for standard HART modems.

Certification of DTMs

Due to the increasing number of available DTMs, it is important to have the quality of the DTMs certified through a standardised, official test procedure according to the guidelines of the FDT group. The available DTM certificates can be found on the website of the FDT Group.
